The Emerald Network is a vision for 250+ miles of seamless greenways in the Boston Metro Region.
This system will eventually connect every neighborhood to open space, transit, and jobs. It will increase mobility, promote active recreation, improve climate change resiliency, and enhance Boston’s competitiveness in the global economy.
The Emerald Network vision includes existing greenways as well as those under construction or in-progress. LivableStreets works to connect greenways that already exist, as well as provide support to build new linear parks. It does this through writing comment letters, activating community support, connecting local activists to allies, and collaborating with municipalities and agencies.

Greenway Legacy
Through the efforts of urban park pioneers Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Eliot, Boston has a rich legacy of linear parks and greenways, but they were never finished. The Emerald Network builds on this portfolio of 100 miles of greenways to create a seamless 200+ mile network across the urban core, from the Mystic River in the north to the Neponset River in the south.
